I had an Artists Alley table at GammaCon Canberra, OzComicCon Canberra, and OzComicCon Sydney this year. It was awesome being able to chat with readers about my books, particularly returning fans who wanted to pick up something new.
Almost as good was the fact I didn’t have to travel to another city for two of them.
Canberra isn’t all that big, so having two large fan conventions in the space of a month is unprecedented.
Until GammaCon started up about a decade ago Canberra had nothing at all, so a huge thanks to the GammaCon team (all volunteers) for putting on such a fantastic event.
For artists (authors in my case) it’s great to have a local venue where you can put your work in front of people.
Similarly, you can’t beat the feeling when someone you met at another convention turns up asking if the next book in a series is available.
I saw many of the same people at both GammaCon Canberra and ComicCon Canberra, suggesting it wasn’t a ‘one or the other’ choice. People were happy to attend both. How great is that?
The one big advantage to attending any convention is the people you meet. While I barely break even at these events, every sale helps to build a long-term audience.
A huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who bought my books. I really hope you enjoy them.
