Looking back, looking forward

three watch faces and the words: looking forward, looking back

Silly Season is done and my usual list of things I want to achieve this year never got written.

I consider resolution lists more of ‘wouldn’t it be nice’ lists, as well as a very successful means of intimidating myself. Because of that, I figured I’ll give it a miss this year.

Instead, I’ll recap last year’s achievements asmotivation. I’m thinking of 2018 as a huge learning curve.

In 2018, I:

  • published Divine Prey, Book 1 of the Noramgaell Saga
  • learned a heck of a lot about sales and marketing (though not nearly enough)
  • started this website
  • became the President of the Canberra Speculative Fiction Guild
  • became the Vice President of the Conflux Speculative Fiction Convention and volunteered to run the Dealer’s room
  • read around 20 books (I blogged about it on my other website if you’re interested: Fandelyon.com)
  • wrote a huge chunk of my ‘how to’ book on writing – Story & Structure: Planning, Editing, Troubleshooting

This year, I want to achieve three things:

  • finish and publish Story & Structure: Planning, Editing, Troubleshooting (it’s not far from being complete)
  • review, edit and publish Epicentre – the first of my mermaid novels
    • it’s in the same story universe as Divine Prey, set thousands of years earlier and on a different world
  • outline (and hopefully write) the sequel to Divine Prey, tentatively titled Divine Changeling
    • I wrote the first draft many blue moons ago, but due to changes in Divine Prey it needs a thorough rewrite now. I’ve decided to scrap the lot and start again.

And that’s my aim for this year. Hopefully there’ll be plenty of other things achieved, but if I finish up 2019 with just those three tasks achieved, I’ll call it a success.

Anything more I’ll call a bonus.

What do you hope to achieve this year?

Chris, it made me tired just reading your list of 2018 accomplishments. I think you can just rest on your laurels in 2019 and still be ahead of the game. I do look forward to your how-to book, though.

Thanks Janet. I’ve been reading your posts and meaning to say a few words, but my home internet is kaput and I hate typing on my phone. Had to hotspot it via my phone internet just to post the blog. 🙁
Hopefully it’ll be sorted by the end of next week.
The books nearly done. I’ll send you a beta copy soon if you like.
